Great musical combinations come together in mysterious ways, often by chance when musicians going about their business strike up a creative partnership that blossoms.
So it was when Mat Woolley and Annie Parsell came together about two years ago in the To'rags, a lively Hobart based celtic band.
Add an introduction to the country rock style of Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris and the country duo Twice Bitten was born in early 2009.
The fusion of folk, rock and country is not new, but the exciting chemistry of Twice Bitten is.
Keith Potger (The Seekers) was very impressed with Twice Bitten when they opened for him (November 2009) at the Polish Club.
“Twice Bitten's act is full of beautiful rock solid vocals and great guitar work. They are an international class act and it was a pleasure to work with them recently”, said Keith Potger.
Twice Bitten are building a considerable repertoire of their own music. They write in a country style but maintain a Tasmanian/ Australian flavour. Their first CD “Now is the Time (for Whiskey)” is an example of this, featuring ten originals, a couple of traditional songs and two traditional arrangements that showcase the talent of this duo.
Most remarkable of the interpretations is the treatment of 'Sin City', a Gram Parsons/Chris Hillman song from the Flying Burrito Brothers era. A stunning song when recorded by the Burrito's, it takes on a new lease of life and is a must listen.
